For travel and jet lag
How should you time supplements when travelling across time zones?
How should you time supplements when travelling across time zones?
When you change time zones, shift your schedule gradually toward your destination's meal and sleep times rather than your home clock. Keep fat-soluble vitamins with meals and calming nutrients before your new bedtime. For anything sleep-related, follow the same timing principles and speak to a professional before changing a routine.
Shift to destination time
On the flight and on landing, move meals and sleep toward the destination clock. Take supplements with the new meals, not the old ones. A day or two of imperfect timing is fine, consistency reappears once you settle in.
A long-haul example
Day of flight: take morning supplements as usual before leaving. On the plane, treat any served meal as a meal and take fat-soluble vitamins with it. On arrival, take evening supplements at the destination's bedtime, not at your home bedtime.
What to keep with meals
Fat-soluble vitamins and omega-3 still need a meal with fat. Mineral spacing still applies. The principles do not change, only the clock face does.
Anything sleep-related
Melatonin is commonly suggested for jet lag but it is dose-sensitive and not something to start without advice. Magnesium glycinate is a gentler option for winding down, used the same way as at home.
Frequently asked
Do I need extra supplements when I travel?
Usually no. A travel-friendly routine is the same items at different clock times.
When does the new schedule kick in?
Move to destination times from the first full day on the ground. Most people settle in two to four days.
What about supplements that have to be refrigerated?
Pack a cool insert or skip them for the trip if travel will be long, rather than risk a heat-affected bottle.

This guide does not recommend melatonin or any sleep aid by dose. For sleep or jet lag concerns, speak to a clinician.
