Can I take Copper and Zinc together?

Long-term high zinc can deplete copper, balance the ratio and space doses.

How it works

The mechanism

High-dose zinc induces metallothionein in enterocytes, which binds copper and traps it inside cells that are shed into the gut. Sustained intake above ~40 mg/day of zinc can cause copper deficiency over weeks to months.

Dose where it matters

When the interaction actually matters

A zinc-to-copper ratio between 8:1 and 15:1 is a common target. Anyone taking >25 mg zinc daily for more than a few weeks should consider 1–2 mg copper.

Who should care most

Who this matters for

People on chronic high-dose zinc (immune support stacks, denture-cream users, some cold protocols).

Evidence strength

Strong evidence

Supported by multiple controlled human studies.
