When to take NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

Take NAC on an empty stomach, 600–1,200mg once or twice daily. It is the precursor to glutathione, the body's master antioxidant. Best taken away from food for absorption, and away from copper or zinc by at least 2 hours since NAC binds metals.

Why timing matters

Absorption is highest fasted; daily total drives the glutathione-supporting effect.

Morning vs. night

Morning preferred; can split AM + PM both fasted.

Why without food

Empty stomach improves absorption; food significantly reduces uptake.

Recommended schedule

  1. Morning, empty stomach

600mg, wait 30 min before food

  2. Optional evening

    Second 600mg before dinner

Don't take with

  • Nitroglycerin (additive blood pressure drop)
  • Copper, zinc, iron (NAC binds; space 2 hours)

FAQ

Why pair away from minerals?

NAC chelates copper and zinc and can reduce their absorption if taken at the same time.

Glutathione directly instead?

Oral glutathione has poor bioavailability; NAC + glycine is the more efficient route to raise intracellular glutathione.

Acetaminophen overdose?

NAC is the medical antidote for acetaminophen toxicity, given IV in hospitals. Don't self-treat overdose, seek emergency care.
