Can I take vitamin D and magnesium together?

Yes. Vitamin D and magnesium are commonly taken at the same time and do not compete for absorption. Magnesium is a cofactor your body needs to convert vitamin D into its active form, so the pairing is biologically supportive. Take vitamin D with a fat-containing meal for best absorption.

Why this pairing works

Magnesium is required for several enzymes that activate vitamin D in the liver and kidneys. People low in magnesium often see weaker vitamin D status even on the same dose. Taking them together, ideally with a meal containing fat, supports both absorption of vitamin D and the conversion pathway.

When to take them

Vitamin D fits naturally with breakfast or lunch if those meals include fat. Many people prefer magnesium glycinate in the evening because it can support wind-down, but any consistent time works. If you take only one daily slot, with the largest fat-containing meal of the day is a reasonable default.

What to watch for

Very high magnesium doses on an empty stomach can cause loose stools. If that happens, split the dose or move it to a meal. Calcium taken in the same dose as magnesium in large amounts can blunt magnesium absorption, so space high-dose calcium by a couple of hours.
