Fat-soluble, take with breakfast for daytime energy support
Pinned to with food, the best window for CoQ10.
Fat-soluble, take with breakfast for daytime energy support
Fat-soluble; mornings are commonly preferred. Best window is with food, yes food. Educational only, not medical advice.
Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble quinone the mitochondria use to make ATP, present in every cell with especially high concentrations in the heart, kidneys, and liver. Endogenous synthesis declines with age and is reduced by statin medications, which block the same HMG-CoA reductase pathway that makes CoQ10. Supplements come in two redox states, ubiquinone (oxidized, cheaper) and ubiquinol (reduced, the form that does the antioxidant work).
Fat-soluble antioxidant supporting cellular energy. Ubiquinol absorbs better than ubiquinone, especially over 40.
Morning, with breakfast that contains some fat. Fat improves absorption substantially. Some people report a mild energy lift, another reason mornings beat evenings. Once-daily dosing is fine at 100 to 200 mg, split into two doses if you take 300 mg or more for better blood levels. If you take statins, your prescriber may suggest CoQ10 to address statin-related muscle complaints, follow their dose.
| Window | Fit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Okay | Calming effect works against the day |
| Midday | Best | Fine if the preferred window is not possible |
| Evening, 1-2h before bed | Poor | May interfere with sleep |
Ubiquinol if you are over 40 or have a malabsorption condition, the body reduces ubiquinone less efficiently with age. Ubiquinone in a softgel with an oil carrier is cheaper and works well for younger adults. Avoid dry capsules and tablets unless they are clearly emulsified or solubilized, absorption is poor without an oil vehicle.
| Form | Notes |
|---|---|
| softgel | Oil-suspended, reliable absorption for fat-soluble nutrients. |
| capsule | Standard delivery, neutral taste. |
Who takes it: Adults on statin medications (the most common evidence-based indication), people with heart failure under cardiology guidance, migraine sufferers (modest preventive evidence), people with fertility goals (egg quality research), and older adults supporting general mitochondrial function.
Statins lower CoQ10 levels; some doctors recommend supplementing while on statins.
Fish Oil (Omega-3)
Fat-soluble; take with a meal to reduce reflux and aid absorption.
Vitamin E
Fat-soluble antioxidant; pairs well with fish oil.
Vitamin D3
Fat-soluble; pair with a meal containing fat for better absorption.
Magnesium Glycinate
Calming form of magnesium; supports wind-down.
NAD+ Booster
NAD+ blend; mornings.
