Take with a fatty meal to absorb EPA and DHA
Pinned to with food, the best window for Fish Oil (Omega-3).
Take with a fatty meal to absorb EPA and DHA
Fat-soluble; take with a meal to reduce reflux and aid absorption. Best window is with food, yes food. Educational only, not medical advice.
Fish oil supplies the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, which the body uses to build cell membranes, dampen inflammation, support cardiovascular function, and maintain neural tissue. Most diets are low in EPA and DHA because they only come from fatty fish, krill, or algae. Supplements provide them in triglyceride, ethyl-ester, or phospholipid (krill) forms.
Fat-soluble essential fatty acids. Take with your largest meal for best absorption and to minimize burps.
With your largest, fattiest meal. Two reasons. First, omega-3s are fat-soluble and meal fat improves absorption sharply. Second, reflux ('fishy burps') happens almost entirely when fish oil sits in a near-empty stomach. Time of day matters less than meal pairing, dinner is fine. Splitting morning and evening doses works well above 2 g/day. If you take a high dose (~3 g) and notice easy bruising, talk to your clinician.
| Window | Fit | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Okay | Calming effect works against the day |
| Midday | Best | Fine if the preferred window is not possible |
| Evening, 1-2h before bed | Poor | May interfere with sleep |

Both fat-soluble, same meal works well.
Both fat-soluble, same meal works well.
Vitamin E helps protect omega-3s from oxidation.
Take together
Triglyceride or re-esterified triglyceride forms absorb best. Ethyl ester is cheapest and still effective. Look for third-party purity testing (IFOS, USP) to confirm low mercury and oxidation. Krill oil supplies less EPA and DHA per gram but in a phospholipid carrier some prefer for reflux. Algae oil is the vegan source, identical EPA and DHA molecules, no fish supply chain.
| Form | Notes |
|---|---|
| softgel | Oil-suspended, reliable absorption for fat-soluble nutrients. |
| liquid | Fine titration, easy for kids and pill-averse adults. |
Who takes it: People who eat fatty fish less than twice a week, vegans and vegetarians (algae form), people with elevated triglycerides (under clinician guidance, prescription-grade omega-3s are used at higher doses), pregnant people (DHA for fetal brain), and anyone managing dry eye, mood, or joint stiffness. Skip or discuss with your clinician if you take warfarin or are scheduled for surgery.
Both matter. EPA leans toward mood and inflammation; DHA leans brain and eye.
Take with food, try enteric-coated, or freeze the softgels.
