With or without food
Biotin: with or without food?
Quick answer
Biotin: take it on an empty stomach. Water-soluble; food is optional.
Why food changes absorption
Food is optional. Biotin absorbs well with or without food. If you take it as part of a B-complex, the food rule that applies to the B-complex (with a meal to reduce nausea from B6) applies here. Standalone high-dose biotin can be taken any time. Avoid taking biotin with raw egg whites, which contain avidin, a protein that binds biotin and blocks absorption. Cooked eggs are fine, the heat denatures avidin.
Dose and form notes
The adequate intake is 30 mcg per day for adults, far below the doses sold in hair and nail supplements (typically 5,000 to 10,000 mcg per dose). There is no established tolerable upper intake level, and doses up to 10 mg per day have been used in trials without toxicity. For typical hair, skin, and nail support, 2,500 to 5,000 mcg per day is the studied range, though evidence in healthy adults without deficiency is weak. For brittle nail syndrome specifically, 2,500 mcg daily for 6 to 12 months has decent evidence. For genetic biotinidase deficiency (rare), high-dose biotin is medical treatment, not a supplement decision.
If it upsets your stomach
Nausea in the first week is common and usually about how the dose meets an empty stomach, not about the compound itself. Take Biotin in the middle of a meal rather than before it, and split the dose across two meals if the label allows. Larger single doses of any supplement are harder on the stomach than the same total split in two. Persistent pain, reflux, or upset that lasts beyond a couple of weeks is a reason to stop and talk to a clinician rather than push through.
Attach it to a meal you already eat
The most reliable food rule is the one that needs no new habit. Pick the meal you eat most consistently, for most people that is either breakfast or dinner, and put Biotin next to it physically: the bottle beside the kettle, or on the dinner table rather than in a cupboard. Because this one does not depend on a particular meal composition, the choice is purely about which meal you never skip.
What to take Biotin with
| Taken with | What it does |
|---|---|
| A fat-containing meal (eggs, avocado, olive oil, nuts) | Neutral to helpful. Biotin does not need fat, but food softens any stomach upset. |
| A high-fibre meal (bran, psyllium, large salads) | Fibre binds bile acids and minerals in the gut and can modestly reduce uptake. Keep a large fibre load in a different meal where you can. |
| Coffee or tea | Usually fine, but coffee is not a meal. If this needs food, coffee with cream does not count. |
| Calcium-rich dairy | Generally fine unless you are also taking a mineral supplement in the same slot. |
| Water only, on an empty stomach | Acceptable. Absorption does not depend on food, so pick whichever is easier to keep up. |
Questions people ask
Does biotin really grow hair?
In people with measurable biotin deficiency, yes, supplementation reverses the deficiency-related hair changes. In healthy adults without deficiency, evidence for accelerated hair growth at 5,000 to 10,000 mcg per day is weak. If you have thinning hair, get checked for iron, thyroid, vitamin D, and ferritin first, these are far more common drivers than biotin. Why pause biotin before lab tests?
Biotin at doses above 5 mg per day can interfere with the immunoassay technology used for thyroid hormones, troponin (heart attack marker), parathyroid hormone, vitamin D, and many other tests, producing misleading results. The FDA has issued safety communications. Pause for at least 72 hours before lab work and tell your clinician and the lab any biotin you take.Is high-dose biotin safe?
Toxicity is essentially unreported even at very high doses (over 100 mg per day in genetic deficiency treatment), but assay interference is a real and underappreciated risk. The supplement itself is safe; the consequences of a missed heart attack diagnosis or a wrong thyroid treatment decision because of skewed labs are not. Use low doses when high doses are not needed.Do I need biotin if I take a B-complex?
A standard B-complex provides 30 to 300 mcg of biotin, well above the adequate intake. Adding a separate high-dose biotin on top is rarely necessary and increases the risk of assay interference. Use a single B-complex unless you have a specific high-dose indication.Does coffee count as food for Biotin?
No. Coffee, even with milk or cream, does not provide the meal context that reduces stomach upset. Treat it as water with caffeine, and pair the dose with actual food if food is recommended. What if I take Biotin and then do not eat?
Nothing to worry about. Absorption here does not depend on food, so a missed meal only matters if the dose tends to upset your stomach.
