With or without food
Selenium: with or without food?
Quick answer
Selenium: take it with food. Food improves tolerance and reduces nausea.
Why food changes absorption
Take with a meal for tolerance. Selenium absorption from selenomethionine is excellent (over 90 percent) with or without food, but a meal reduces the mild nausea some users report and slows the plasma spike. Avoid taking selenium with very high-dose Vitamin C at the exact same moment (Vitamin C can reduce some selenium forms and affect absorption mildly), space by 2 hours. No important fibre or fat interactions.
Dose and form notes
The adult RDA is 55 mcg per day. The standard supplemental range is 100 to 200 mcg per day; 200 mcg per day is the typical thyroid-support dose used in Hashimoto's protocols and the dose studied in the SELECT and NPC trials. The adult tolerable upper intake level is 400 mcg per day; chronic intake above this causes selenosis, with symptoms including hair loss, brittle nails, garlic breath (dimethyl selenide), peripheral neuropathy, and at very high doses cardiomyopathy. Selenomethionine (from yeast or synthetic) is the best-absorbed and best-retained form, and is preferred for routine supplementation. Sodium selenite and sodium selenate are cheaper and used in some multis, they absorb somewhat less efficiently but are still bioavailable. One brazil nut already contains 60 to 90 mcg of selenium (highly variable), so a few brazil nuts a day can supply daily needs, and stacking them with a 200 mcg supplement risks exceeding the UL.
If it upsets your stomach
Nausea in the first week is common and usually about how the dose meets an empty stomach, not about the compound itself. Take Selenium in the middle of a meal rather than before it, and split the dose across two meals if the label allows. Larger single doses of any supplement are harder on the stomach than the same total split in two. Persistent pain, reflux, or upset that lasts beyond a couple of weeks is a reason to stop and talk to a clinician rather than push through.
Attach it to a meal you already eat
The most reliable food rule is the one that needs no new habit. Pick the meal you eat most consistently, for most people that is either breakfast or dinner, and put Selenium next to it physically: the bottle beside the kettle, or on the dinner table rather than in a cupboard. Because this one does not depend on a particular meal composition, the choice is purely about which meal you never skip.
What to take Selenium with
| Taken with | What it does |
|---|---|
| A fat-containing meal (eggs, avocado, olive oil, nuts) | Neutral to helpful. Selenium does not need fat, but food softens any stomach upset. |
| A high-fibre meal (bran, psyllium, large salads) | Fibre binds bile acids and minerals in the gut and can modestly reduce uptake. Keep a large fibre load in a different meal where you can. |
| Coffee or tea | Worth avoiding at the same time. Polyphenols and tannins in coffee and tea bind minerals and can noticeably cut Selenium absorption. |
| Calcium-rich dairy | Space this apart. Calcium competes with other minerals at the same intestinal transporters, so pairing it with Selenium lowers both. |
| Water only, on an empty stomach | Acceptable. Absorption does not depend on food, so pick whichever is easier to keep up. |
Questions people ask
Should I just eat brazil nuts instead?
Reasonable, but selenium content varies wildly. A single brazil nut can contain anywhere from 50 to 200 mcg of selenium depending on the soil it grew in, which makes daily dosing unpredictable. If you eat brazil nuts regularly, do not stack with a 200 mcg supplement. A practical pattern is 1 to 2 brazil nuts per day instead of a supplement, or a 100 mcg supplement and no brazil nuts. Do not do both unless you are willing to risk chronic excess.Does coffee count as food for Selenium?
No. Coffee, even with milk or cream, does not provide the meal context that reduces stomach upset. It is worse than neutral here: the polyphenols in coffee and tea bind minerals, so taking Selenium with coffee can measurably reduce how much you absorb. What if I take Selenium and then do not eat?
Nothing to worry about. Absorption here does not depend on food, so a missed meal only matters if the dose tends to upset your stomach.
